Oxford: A teacher is worried about kids’ safety at local pools. She fears that if lifeguards are removed, it could lead to accidents during lessons.

Serco, the leisure operator, wants to replace lifeguards with a new system. This system uses underwater cameras to detect drowning. Teachers will wear watches that alert them if a child is in trouble.

In a recent meeting, the teacher asked where lifeguards would be. She was told they would be “in the area,” but not right by the pool. This setup makes her uneasy about preventing drownings.

Teachers manage six to eleven kids in the water, some as young as six. Lifeguards provide extra eyes and hands when needed. The teacher worries that without them, kids might jump in unexpectedly.

She also mentioned that lifeguards can stop bad behavior quickly. Without them, teachers will have more responsibility, which adds to her concerns.

In 2014, a similar proposal to remove lifeguards faced backlash from parents. They said they wouldn’t send their kids to lessons without lifeguards. The teacher wonders if current parents know about the new plans.

A spokesperson for Oxford City Council said the new technology is still being tested. They confirmed that lifeguards will continue to be part of pool safety for now.

The Royal Lifesaving Society states that while technology can help, it shouldn’t replace lifeguards. Technology can’t perform rescues or provide immediate first aid.

More Leisure Community Trust plans to introduce the new system but hasn’t done so yet. They assure everyone that safety remains their top priority.
