Fife Council has approved NHS Fife’s plans for a new health center on Francis Street, replacing the outdated facility on David Street.
Lochgelly: Fife Council has given the green light for a new health center. This facility will be built on Francis Street, replacing the old one on David Street.
The Scottish Government promised a new medical practice back in 2011. However, funding is still not available, and locals are growing impatient.
In March 2023, Holyrood announced that funding for health centers won’t be confirmed until later this decade. This news was disappointing for many.
Currently, the Lochgelly Health Centre has serious issues. Staff often use buckets to catch water from the leaking roof. It’s clear that the building is not fit for purpose.
NHS Fife submitted their application for the new center in October 2022. They received one objection regarding road safety and traffic concerns.
Planning consent is now in place. Once funding is secured, they can start building a two-storey health and wellbeing center on brownfield land.
The architects aim to create a community-focused center. It will offer flexible spaces and room for future expansion.
The Friends of Lochgelly Health Centre have been active in pushing for this new facility. The site was once home to a block of flats, demolished in 2000.
Nearby, Lochgelly West Primary School and Ore Valley Business Centre will be close neighbors to the new center.
A council report states the building will be centrally located, with parking to the west and green space to the east.
The new center will feature a reception area, consulting rooms, and staff facilities. It promises a bright and welcoming environment.
This new facility will be a significant upgrade from the current building, which has been described as inadequate.
Last July, health secretary Neil Gray toured the current center. He saw firsthand the poor conditions faced by patients and staff.
Dr. Brian Robson highlighted the urgent need for improvements. He showed the minister the leaks and cramped working conditions.
SNP MSP Annabelle Ewing has been advocating for this new center. She reminded the cabinet secretary of the long-standing promise made in 2011.
She emphasized that it’s time for Lochgelly to receive the funding it deserves.
