Flintshire: The state of the roads has been a hot topic lately. You hear folks chatting about it everywhere, from the office to the pub. It’s just one of those things that gets everyone riled up.

A while back, I joined Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, outside a supermarket in Flintshire. We were there to listen to what people had to say about their concerns, especially about the roads.

People were worried about a lot of things, like the health service and rising living costs. But the biggest issue? Potholes. They’re everywhere, and they’re driving everyone nuts.

After years of budget cuts, potholes have become a common sight on our roads. It’s like a game of dodgeball every time you hit the road, whether you’re in a car, on a bike, or even using a mobility scooter.

This month, a report from the RAC revealed a 17% jump in breakdowns caused by potholes. And the Local Government Association estimates it would take over £16 billion to fix the roads in the UK. That’s a staggering amount!

While health and education often steal the spotlight in politics, most people interact with the government through basic services like water, energy, and, of course, the roads they travel daily.

These essentials are the backbone of our daily lives. It’s crucial to get them right. Unfortunately, for too long, we’ve been falling short on these basics, whether it’s crumbling roads or rising energy bills.

In Wales, it’s great to see the First Minister acknowledging the road issues. She’s prioritizing better public transport and fixing our roads, which is a step in the right direction.

The Welsh Government’s draft budget includes an extra £25 million for road repairs and allows local authorities to borrow £60 million to tackle potholes. This means 100,000 potholes could be fixed across Wales!

Flintshire is leading the charge with its new Pothole Pro machine. This nifty piece of equipment can repair potholes in no time and at half the cost of traditional methods. It’s a game changer!

Whether it’s water, energy, or roads, these are the things that shape our everyday lives. That’s why it’s so important to get them right.
