A vacant petrol station in Garforth may soon transform into 42 new flats aimed at helping seniors live independently
Garforth: Housebuilder McCarthy Stone is looking to breathe new life into a vacant site on Barrowby Lane. They’ve applied to Leeds City Council for permission to redevelop the old petrol station.
If all goes well, this spot could soon be home to 42 one and two-bedroom apartments. The plan is to create a space that helps folks over 60 live more independently.
The design report highlights that this type of accommodation is pretty rare in Garforth. The new building would feature 23 one-bedroom and 19 two-bedroom flats, along with parking and communal areas for residents.
Interestingly, this former filling station has been sitting empty for about 20 years. The developers believe that their project will not only improve the site but also benefit the local community.
McCarthy Stone points out that there’s a growing need for housing for older adults, which could help free up homes for younger people. Most of the future residents are expected to have ties to Garforth.
They also mentioned that this new facility would help release much-needed housing back into the local market. Plus, the site is conveniently located just 800 meters from the town center, close to shops, pubs, and social clubs.
With several bus stops nearby, residents will have easy access to the town center and Garforth railway station, making trips to Leeds, York, and beyond a breeze.
