Efforts are underway to secure funding for the restoration of the Llandrindod Wells signal box, a cherished piece of railway history.
Llandrindod Wells: The signal box at the local railway station has seen better days. It’s been falling apart and really needs some TLC.
This box is part of the Heart of Wales Line. They’re teaming up with folks like Network Rail and Transport for Wales to find the cash needed for repairs.
Recently, they had a chat with Tim Hedley-Jones from the Railway Heritage Trust about fixing up this historic spot. They’re excited about the possibilities!
Next up, they plan to gather a group of rail experts and other interested parties to figure out the costs and look for funding options.
Last year, the community really came together to support the idea of restoring the signal box. Owen Griffkin, the community rail development officer, mentioned that they’ll consider local input for its future.
He’s keen to keep the community involved and explore how the signal box can be used if they get the funding.
This Victorian signal box is a throwback to a time when trains were managed with levers and bells. Built in the 1870s, it was moved to Llandrindod in 1990 to save it.
It used to give the signalman a great view of the tracks and the level crossing. But with modern tech, it’s no longer needed.
Last May, Owen reached out on social media to see if locals wanted to take ownership of the box. The response was fantastic, with over 100 people showing interest!
