Newbury: There’s a fantastic chance to dive into clay sculpture with a five-week course at City Arts on Hampton Road.

Rebecca Maynard, a ceramics whiz, will lead the two-hour evening sessions. You’ll learn to sculpt a head from clay using different handbuilding techniques. Plus, you’ll have reference materials and clay models to guide you.

The first sessions focus on getting the form and proportion right. Then, you’ll explore poses, movement, and expressions to give your sculpture some real character. And don’t worry, your final piece will be fired in Rebecca’s kiln.

It might seem a bit daunting if you’re new to this, but Rebecca assures us she’s helped many beginners create pieces they’re proud of.

She says, “This course is spread over five sessions, so if you’re new, it’s perfect for working at your own pace.” It’s also great for anyone looking to sharpen their clay skills with her guidance.

Rebecca is a local artist and experienced tutor who’s been running workshops at City Arts for years. Her stunning ceramic sculptures have even been showcased at the V&A, and she sells her work through galleries in London and Scotland. You can catch her exhibits at The Base Greenham and City Arts during Open Studios each May.

The course runs from February 27 to March 27, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
