Glasgow is set to introduce 1200 new bin hubs, enhancing waste management and recycling efforts while addressing rat issues in the city
Glasgow: The city council has decided to roll out new bin hubs to improve waste management. They’ve been testing these hubs in a few neighborhoods, and it seems to be working well.
These hubs will help with recycling, especially in areas where it’s tough to manage waste from flats. The pilot program showed promising results, so they’re expanding it.
Some neighborhoods like Govan and Ibrox are on the list for these new hubs. They’ve already tried them out in places like Pollokshields and Finnieston.
Broxap, a street furniture company, has landed the contract, and we might see these hubs popping up around April or May.
They set aside £4.6 million for this project, but the actual cost came in at £2.48 million, which is a nice saving. Each hub will hold several large bins and a food waste bin.
One council member, Cllr Ruairi Kelly, raised concerns about the quality of the hubs. An official assured him that they’ve done their homework and the supplier has experience with other councils.
Cllr Dan Hutchison mentioned that the trials were eye-opening. He pointed out some issues, like the bins not being accessible for everyone, especially those who are smaller or disabled.
Officials confirmed that the new hubs will include rat traps, addressing a key concern. They’re also working on making the bins easier to use.
Another council member, Cllr Stephen Docherty, asked about how the pilot went and if people were dumping trash next to the hubs. The official said the recycling quality from these hubs is much better than from backcourts.
They’re still looking at the data to see how to improve things further. Cleansing teams are also on the lookout for any litter around the hubs, but it’s mostly manageable.
