Glasgow has kicked off an exciting new scheme to promote reusable cups, aiming to reduce waste and encourage sustainable habits among locals.
Glasgow: Borrow Cup launched in Glasgow on Monday with over 40 shops on board. Big names like Costa Coffee and Burger King are in, along with local spots like Kelvingrove Museum.
This initiative, started by charity Hubbub and Reposit, hopes to spread across Scotland and the UK if it goes well in the first three months.
When you buy a drink, you can opt for a Borrow Cup with a £1 deposit. Plus, many places offer discounts or loyalty rewards for using them.
These cups come in three sizes, and you can swap your used cup for a clean one or a £1 voucher. It’s interesting to note that while many people own reusable cups, not everyone uses them regularly.
In Scotland alone, 388 million disposable cups are tossed out each year. Gavin Ellis from Hubbub mentioned that tackling this waste is a priority for Scotland.
He’s hopeful that Borrow Cup will make reusing cups a common choice. The success of this project really depends on how many people join in and return their cups.
Stuart Chidley from Reposit expressed excitement about helping locals and businesses switch to returnable cups. He believes Glasgow is setting an example for others to follow.
Nicola Pierce from Burger King UK shared that they’re thrilled to partner with Hubbub for this initiative, looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.
Caffe Nero’s Gareth Hopley added that they’ve always supported recycling and are eager to see how Borrow Cup complements their existing loyalty programs.
