A Glasgow student shines at a prestigious Burns supper in NYC, showcasing his culinary skills and receiving a special award
New York City: Charlton Russell, a second-year cookery student from the City of Glasgow College, got a fantastic opportunity to help with the 30th annual Burns Night celebration. This event was hosted by the American-Scottish Foundation.
Thanks to a partnership between his college and the foundation, Charlton was able to join in on this special occasion. The celebration, linked with the University Club of New York, honors Robert Burns, Scotland’s beloved poet.
Charlton teamed up with Scotland’s national chef, Gary MacLean, to whip up a menu filled with traditional Scottish dishes, including the famous haggis. He was really in his element!
He prepared some delicious Scottish treats for the event, and he couldn’t believe he was doing a Burns Dinner in New York. “I’m still pinching myself,” he said, reflecting on the amazing experience.
Charlton expressed his gratitude to his guidance lecturer, Andy Cummings, and Gary MacLean for their support during his time in New York. The event kicked off with a piper leading a procession, which included the chef and whisky bearers presenting the haggis.
Robbi Munro recited Burns’ famous poem, “Address to a Haggis,” before slicing the haggis, making it a memorable moment for everyone involved. Charlton’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed; he received the inaugural Young Chef Wallace Award from the American-Scottish Foundation.
Gary MacLean shared how special it was to see Charlton receive this award, highlighting his passion and dedication. It’s truly inspiring to see young talent recognized on such a big stage—well done, Charlton!
