Glasgow: A TikTok video featuring Tracy Burns, the instructor for the Women in Construction course at Glasgow Kelvin College, has gone viral, racking up 150,000 views.

This female-only course is all about encouraging women to step into the construction world. In the video, Tracy gives a tour of the college and explains what the course offers.

Glasgow Kelvin College started this initiative to attract more women to construction, especially since the demand for female workers is on the rise. The industry is finally recognizing how important diversity is.

The TikTok post has sparked nearly 300 comments, with many praising the course. One viewer said, “Love this. Needing more women in the building industry.”

Another commenter shared their experience, saying, “As a tradeswoman, this is actually needed. Half the women I know got pushed out by guys because they didn’t have the same friendships.”

Someone even asked if it was too late to return to a similar course after dropping out years ago. The Women in Construction program is a pre-apprenticeship course designed for women eager to enter the field.

It covers four main trades: joinery, roofing, painting and décor, and brickwork. The only requirement is a genuine interest in construction.

Tracy, who has nearly 30 years of experience as a joiner, emphasized that construction has been male-dominated, making it seem less accessible to women. But she believes the industry is changing for the better.

She mentioned that there are plenty of career opportunities and that many companies are now creating supportive environments for women, complete with mentoring and safe workplaces.

Tracy is thrilled to be part of a course that helps women take their first steps into construction, sharing her passion for the rewarding careers available in this field.
