Ashford: The government is looking to end the 50mph speed limit on the M20. They want to replace the current Operation Brock system, which many find frustrating.

Ministers are exploring new ideas to help manage traffic better. They aim to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) queuing on local roads.

According to a letter from the roads minister, Lilian Greenwood, they plan to use digital technology and off-road sites for HGVs during busy times.

However, this project is still in the early stages. For now, Operation Brock will continue to be used on the M20 between Ashford and Maidstone.

This system helps manage cross-Channel traffic and prevent local roads from getting too congested. But many residents find it a hassle.

Local MPs have raised concerns about the need for Operation Brock during school holidays. They want to ensure it’s not always in place.

In her letter, Greenwood confirmed the government is committed to improving the Port of Dover. This will help reduce traffic issues in Kent.

She mentioned that they are reviewing past proposals and are keen to find long-term solutions to ease HGV queues.

Talks with potential tech suppliers are already underway. But Greenwood noted that this solution will take time to implement.

Additionally, new EU checks will be rolled out gradually, allowing for flexibility during heavy congestion.

MPs like Helen Whately are pushing for the £45 million grant to support the Port of Dover’s redevelopment. They believe it will help ease local traffic problems.

Other local representatives, like Sojan Joseph, agree that Operation Brock has been a major inconvenience for residents.

The Department for Transport is working with local councils to improve traffic management near the border. They hope to provide funding for the Port of Dover’s upgrades soon.

Folkestone and Hythe MP Tony Vaughan and Dover and Deal MP Mike Tapp have not yet responded to inquiries about this issue.
