Tugboat crews in Greenock are set to vote on strike action due to safety issues and lack of consultation from Serco Marine
Greenock: The Unite trade union says Serco Marine workers are being left out of important talks. This affects crews in Inverclyde, Faslane, Kyle of Lochalsh, Devonport, and Portsmouth.
Serco is negotiating a new 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defence. This contract is worth £1.2 million and involves moving nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.
Unite warns that proposed service changes could disrupt their ability to provide year-round, 24/7 service. This includes crucial operations for the continuous at-sea deterrent.
The union insists that workers should be part of these discussions. In the past, their input has been vital for understanding how services operate at sea.
Unite’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, emphasizes the importance of these experienced seafarers. They have the skills to safely tow large vessels, which is critical for operations.
About 300 tugboat and marine services crews are voting on strike action. The ballot opens today and lasts for two weeks.
Serco Marine staff also handle passenger transport, tank cleaning, and delivering essential supplies at Royal Navy ports. They participate in trials and nuclear safety activities too.
Unite’s national officer, John McGookin, states that members feel forced to consider strike action. They worry the new contract will lead to inadequate services.
A Serco spokesperson expressed disappointment over the strike ballot. They are committed to keeping union members informed about ongoing discussions with the MoD.
The Ministry of Defence reassured that Royal Navy operations will not be affected by the potential strike. They are ready to help resolve the situation if needed.
