Greenwich Council aims to connect cycle routes near Cutty Sark with a new lane, enhancing safety and accessibility for cyclists.
Greenwich: The council is planning a new cycle lane near the Cutty Sark. This lane will connect two existing routes. It will run along College Approach.
Right now, cyclists often ride through Cutty Sark Gardens. But the council says this isn’t safe. The area gets crowded with pedestrians.
The new route will go along Welland Street and Thames Street. Then, it will link up with the cycleway heading towards Deptford.
This plan is a temporary fix until a new cycleway opens on Creek Road. That will be part of a low-traffic neighbourhood project.
Even after the new cycleway opens, the council plans to keep this route. They believe it will help different users and trips.
Work on this interim scheme should start this autumn. The low-traffic neighbourhood construction is set to begin in October 2027.
The council can’t open the Creek Road route yet. They need to make big changes to the road network first. This is to avoid affecting bus times and traffic jams.
To make way for the new lane, some parking bays will be removed in College Approach, Greenwich Church Street, and King William Walk.
Also, the play area between Welland Street and Thames Street will be redesigned. This will allow for a separate cycle lane next to the footpath.
The council is asking for public feedback on these plans until February 28.
They noted that Greenwich town centre is a World Heritage site. However, heavy traffic leads to poor air quality and crowded sidewalks.
Connecting these cycle routes will help more people ride safely and confidently. This will benefit commuters, families, and casual riders alike. Transport for London will fund the project.
