A new Greggs is going up on Bath Road in Southcote. It takes the place of The George & Dragon pub. The pub got torn down in August of last year. Savills helped sell the land for the drive-thru bakery.

Construction workers have been busy on the site since then, with plans to open the new Greggs in the next few months. The building’s outside is nearly done, and they finished many outdoor features.

On February 5th, workers landscaped the area. The car park has thirty-three spaces, including two disabled parking spaces and two waiting bays. Ten spaces have electric vehicle chargers.

They finished a bike shelter that fits ten bikes, and the work should wrap up in March. Greggs needs permission to put up signs and also requires planning permission for outside fixtures.

Neighbors worried about traffic, noise, and potential light pollution. Ethne Humphreys stated the development wouldn’t significantly harm anyone, and the council approved it in December 2023.

Another Greggs drive-thru was approved near Stadium Way by a planning inspector last March. However, nothing has happened at this location yet.

Greggs stated they constantly assess new locations and will soon share information about the sites. Plans for the Bath Road location are under review, with references PL/25/0070 and PL/25/0071.

The plans show Greggs’ blue and orange colors on the building, and they also want to install air conditioning units. The George & Dragon closed in 2020 and was a Greene King Hungry Horse pub. Two local Hungry Horse pubs still exist.
