A family is heartbroken after discovering a mound of dirt on their veteran’s grave during a visit on his birthday
Flint: A family was left in shock when they found a huge pile of dirt on their veteran’s grave. It was supposed to be a special day, his birthday.
Clare Williams went to Flint Cemetery to honor her late brother-in-law, Tony Davies. But instead of a peaceful visit, she was met with a mountain of earth covering his grave.
She quickly called her sister, Sarah Growcott, to warn her about the situation. Clare didn’t want Sarah to see the disrespectful state of her husband’s resting place.
Clare shared that she was puzzled at first, not realizing the grave was buried under the dirt. It was especially upsetting since it was Tony’s first birthday since he passed away ten months ago.
She said, “I totally understand that graves need to be dug up, but the flowers were just piled on top of each other. It felt so disrespectful.”
They returned later that evening when the dirt had been cleared. But even then, the flowers placed back on Tony’s grave weren’t even his, which made it clear that there was a lack of care.
Tony had served in the Army for 13 years, and Clare felt he deserved better treatment in his final resting place.
Flintshire County Council has since apologized to the family. They acknowledged the mistake and promised to take steps to prevent it from happening again.
Katie Wilby, the Chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation, explained that sometimes soil is placed on adjacent graves during the digging process. However, they failed to handle it properly this time.
She expressed her sincere apologies for the distress caused and assured that they would do better in the future. It’s a sensitive issue, and they understand how important it is to treat these sites with respect.
