Hampshire County Council is ensuring the safety of its school buildings amid concerns over structural integrity and potential defects
Hampshire: So, there’s been some buzz about school buildings in Hampshire. The County Council is on it, checking out some older schools that might have hidden issues.
Last year, the National Audit Office flagged around 3,600 school blocks that could be at risk. That’s a big number when you think about it!
They’ve got contractors looking into these buildings, which were built between 1945 and 1990. Some schools might even have to close if they don’t meet safety standards.
But here’s the good news: Hampshire County Council says none of their current schools have the materials that could be a problem. They’ve got a mix of old and new buildings, with about 40% built between 1960 and 1975.
A council spokesperson mentioned that the steel frame structures are holding up well. They’re actively replacing roofs, windows, and other parts to keep everything in tip-top shape.
Plus, they have a solid inspection program in place. Qualified engineers are checking all the buildings regularly. If they find anything concerning, they jump right on it to fix it up.
So, while there’s some worry out there, Hampshire County Council is making sure their schools are safe and sound!
