Harley’s Vintage Boutique in Chester is closing next month after struggling with foot traffic, as owner Kim Perreault announces a clearance sale.
Chester: Kim Perreault is shutting down Harley’s Vintage Boutique on Bridge Street Row next month. She kicked off a closing sale this weekend.
Originally from Canada, Kim took over the shop in January 2024. She really tried to make it work, but sadly, fewer customers came in, even on weekends.
“It felt like a bigger issue with foot traffic,” Kim shared. “Each month, it just got worse.” She mentioned that on some weekdays, fewer than ten people would stop by.
“Saturdays used to be busy, but that changed too,” she added. By June, she had to make some hard choices, letting go of her full-time employee and closing on Mondays and Tuesdays.
“I had to cover the shifts myself just to keep up with bills. Paying myself was out of the question, but thankfully, I had another business to lean on,” she explained.
Kim also warned others thinking about starting a business in Chester, especially in the Rows. She did mention that help might be on the way.
“If you’re thinking of opening a shop here, do your homework,” she advised. “Chester seems to be more about dining and drinking these days than shopping.”
She suggested spending time in the city during the week to see how busy it really is. “Understand your lease well; it can be pricey, and there are hidden costs,” she cautioned.
“If you’re eyeing a spot on the Rows, just know visibility is a challenge. Even after three years, I still meet people who are discovering my shop for the first time.”
However, she noted that there’s been recent planning approval for better signage to help with visibility.
Kim is ready to move on and plans to spend time with family while focusing on her other businesses. “There’s still time to visit us and take advantage of our clearance sale,” she said.
“Thanks to everyone who supported us over the years. Luckily, there are still two great vintage shops in Chester: Lily Vintage near the cathedral and the Vintage Spot in the market.”
