Heneb has received £238,000 to enhance Welsh archaeology, focusing on sustainability and community engagement over the next two years
Cardiff: Heneb, the Trust for Welsh Archaeology, just landed a cool £238,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This cash will kick off a two-year project starting in January 2025.
Heneb was formed by merging four archaeological trusts in Wales. With this funding, they plan to boost their operations and make sure archaeology in Wales has a bright and inclusive future.
The project will kick off with some solid planning. They’re looking to create a five-year roadmap to guide their growth and efforts in preserving heritage.
They’ll also focus on fundraising and business development. A new business development manager will help keep the finances in check.
Digital engagement is on the agenda too. They’re planning to revamp their website and social media to get more people involved in Welsh archaeology.
Plus, they want to improve volunteer management, making it easier for folks from all backgrounds to join in.
Heneb aims to connect schools and local groups with archaeological activities, helping everyone feel a part of Welsh history.
This initiative is all about protecting archaeological sites and inspiring future archaeologists. The Historic Environment Record supports over 20,000 planning applications each year, helping to safeguard these sites from development and climate change.
Dr. Carol Bell, chair of Heneb, expressed gratitude for the funding, saying it’s a crucial time for Welsh archaeology. She highlighted the importance of making operations sustainable and expanding public engagement.
Andrew White from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales added that archaeological discoveries are a key part of Wales’ heritage. He’s thrilled to support Heneb in ensuring this field thrives for years to come.
