Excitement builds as historians and locals plan events for the Captain Swing Riots bicentenary in 2030, aiming to engage the community.
Winchester: Recently, a gathering took place at Abbey House, bringing together historians, poets, and local dignitaries. They all came to discuss the upcoming bicentenary of the Captain Swing Riots.
Everyone was buzzing with ideas, hoping to create a community around this important piece of history. The big anniversary is set for 2030, and there are plans for events, exhibitions, and lectures throughout the year.
Edward Fennell, the project coordinator from The English Project, shared how the SWING project started back in 2022. He expressed gratitude for the hard work of many historians and creatives who have contributed so far.
Fennell feels that this event marks a significant moment to kick off their plans for the future. He’s excited about the potential for spectacular exhibitions and performances in 2030.
The Swing Riots kicked off in 1830, fueled by rural protests across southern England. It all began in Kent, where people were upset about Irish laborers and the new threshing machines that were taking jobs away.
As tensions rose, letters from the fictional ‘Captain Swing’ were sent to machine owners, highlighting the poor working conditions and fears of job loss. Nearly 2,000 people faced trials, with some receiving harsh sentences.
Fennell pointed out that the story of the Swing Riots is not just historical; it’s a modern parable about how society handles change and the struggles between the powerful and the powerless.
He even drew parallels to recent riots in the UK, showing that these themes are still relevant today. The evening featured speeches from various local figures, including the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Russell Gordon-Smith.
Poet Georgia Hilton shared her work inspired by the riots, and there was even a new website launched for people to share their thoughts and contributions.
