Some folks think the definition should include environmental extremists and conspiracy theorists, but the government seems set on sticking with Islamist and far-right extremism.
A spokesperson from the Home Office said they’re still figuring things out and haven’t officially agreed to the report’s findings. They want to tackle the most pressing issues first.
Interestingly, the report also talked about limiting how many “non-crime hate incidents” get recorded and even suggested creating a new crime for harmful online communications.
Some experts worry that this could lead to a flood of new cases and might even threaten free speech by labeling normal political discussions as extremist.
In a related incident, after a teenager was found guilty of a shocking crime at a dance class, there’s been a lot of talk about what terrorism really means these days.
The Prime Minister mentioned that this kind of violence is different from traditional terrorism, pointing to young men who get caught up in extreme online content.
He hinted that the government might need to change laws to deal with this new threat and review how they handle extremism overall.
It’s worth noting that this teenager had been referred to the Prevent program multiple times, but those cases were closed because he didn’t seem to have a clear ideology.
Now, the Home Secretary is looking into how Prevent decides who to focus on.
