A heartfelt vigil in Belfast honors John George, whose body was discovered in Spain after a lengthy search by family and friends
His family reported him missing on December 14, which led to a massive search effort. Friends and supporters even flew in from Belfast to help look for him.
To honor him, hundreds gathered at St Luke’s Church in Twinbrook for a vigil. They released lanterns into the night sky, creating a beautiful scene in his memory.
Some of the lanterns carried messages like, “To those whose flame has been extinguished, let this light represent our love and compassion. We will never forget you.”
Many others joined in online, sharing photos of their own lights and candles lit for John.
Sadly, his family announced that his funeral, originally set for Friday, has been postponed. His sister Courtney shared on social media that all arrangements were canceled for now due to unforeseen circumstances.
John’s remains were flown into Dublin from Spain, where undertakers collected them to bring back to Belfast.
He was remembered as a devoted father to his two sons, Jason and Jacob, and a beloved brother and partner.
The funeral notice expressed how deeply he would be missed by his family and friends.
Meanwhile, Spanish police are still investigating his death. A 32-year-old man from the Czech Republic was arrested but has since been released on bail.
Authorities are also searching for another suspect who may have fled the area.
John last spoke to his family on December 14, and they later learned he had lost his phone but was supposed to fly back to Belfast on December 18.
Interpol is now helping with the investigation into his murder.
