Huntly Castle’s tower is now open again, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and enjoy stunning views from the top
Huntly: The tower at Huntly Castle is finally open again! Visitors can climb to the top and soak in some amazing views. It’s been closed for a while, but now you can explore this historic gem.
Historic Environment Scotland knows how important this castle is to Scotland’s past. They held a little ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the spiral staircase that leads to the tower. It’s a big deal for the community!
Victoria MacEwen, who manages the castle, shared that the tower was shut down after the pandemic for some much-needed refurbishments. Thanks to the hard work of the maintenance team, it’s back in action.
She mentioned that the view from the top is breathtaking. You can take your time going up, so no need to rush through all five storeys at once. It’s all about enjoying the experience!
Huntly Castle has a fascinating history. The first version was built in the 1100s and belonged to the Earls of Fife. It changed hands a few times, especially after the Battle of Bannockburn.
Fast forward to 1562, and Mary Queen of Scots sent troops to arrest the fourth Earl of Huntly. He made a daring escape, but his troubles were far from over. His story is just one of many that make this castle so intriguing.
Over the years, the castle has seen its fair share of drama, including battles and political strife. The Gordons, who owned the castle for centuries, were at the center of it all.
At the reopening ceremony, there was entertainment from local dance groups and singers, making it a festive occasion. It’s great to see the community come together to celebrate such an important landmark.
Victoria also pointed out how beautiful the castle’s location is, right by the river Deveron. And let’s not forget Buster, the friendly cat who’s become a bit of a mascot at the visitor center. He’s a real character!
