Hyndburn Council’s leader has pulled a crucial £1 million leisure grant plan, raising concerns about the future of local leisure services
Hyndburn: So, the council was all set to discuss a big £1 million grant for local leisure services. But just as the meeting kicked off, the leader, Cllr Munsif Dad, decided to pull the proposal. Talk about a surprise!
This move has left some folks, especially Cllr Zak Khan from the Conservative opposition, pretty worried. He’s concerned about how this might affect the council’s finances and the future of Hyndburn Leisure.
The original plan was to support community leisure services for the next year, but now it’s all up in the air. The council had been helping Hyndburn Leisure with grants for years, but they stopped funding in 2021/22 to encourage self-sufficiency.
Since then, things have been tough for leisure providers everywhere, and Hyndburn Leisure is no exception. Rising energy costs, staffing expenses, and inflation have hit hard, leading to a request for more financial help.
Cllr Khan is worried that not getting this grant could be a big blow to Hyndburn Leisure, which plays a vital role in promoting health in the area. Meanwhile, Cllr Dad mentioned that the report was pulled for some technical reasons and will be back on the table soon.
