Accrington: Cllr Mike Booth is calling for a celebration of Hyndburn’s rich heritage. He made this appeal during a local authority meeting on Thursday night.

Booth expressed pride in the work done by the Hyndburn Prospects Foundation. He reminisced about his arrival in Accrington back in 1970 when The Coppice had barely any trees.

Since then, the area has blossomed into a beautiful green valley with lovely woodland walks and great recreational spots. He highlighted the importance of public parks and local sports facilities like the Accrington Stanley Community Hub.

Last year, he visited the reclamation project at Brookside and Bury Meadow in Stanhill, Oswaldtwistle. He noted the focus on promoting local heritage and history.

Booth mentioned the recent opening of the Pals Memorial garden and the unveiling of the Pals statue as significant steps in this direction. He also pointed out Hyndburn’s impressive history in the cotton industry.

He talked about Robert ‘Parsley’ Peel, who experimented with dyes at Brookside Printworks in the late 18th century. Other notable figures included James Simpson and Frederick Steiner, who contributed to the local textile industry.

Booth emphasized that without these pioneers, the Lancashire cotton industry might not have existed. He believes Hyndburn deserves to celebrate its unique contributions to the cotton industry.

He posed a challenge: how can Hyndburn become more colorful by 2025? It’s time to recognize and celebrate the borough’s vibrant past.
