Survivors of institutional abuse are being urged to step forward before the deadline for redress applications in April 2025. It’s a big deal, and time is running out.
Many people went through tough times in residential institutions run by religious groups and the state from 1922 to 1995. The Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry back in 2017 revealed some pretty awful stuff, including sexual and physical abuse.
Since then, there have been recommendations for a public apology and financial help for the victims. So far, around £100 million has been paid out to those affected.
Recently, some key campaigners met with First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly to discuss extending the application deadline.
Jon McCourt from Survivors North West pointed out that many people are still waiting to come forward, and they really need to act fast.
A law firm, KRW Law, is also pushing for eligible individuals to apply as soon as possible. They’ve helped clients secure over £2.3 million in redress just this year.
