A domestic abuser avoids jail time after sending threatening messages to his wife, prompting a stern warning from the sheriff.
Sheriff Gary Aitken had kept Clay in custody during the holidays. He was upset about the awful messages Clay sent, including threats to harm his wife and her family. The sheriff told Clay he was being selfish and wallowing in self-pity.
Instead of jail, Clay will be supervised for two years and must attend a program for domestic abusers. The sheriff warned him that failing to complete this program would lead to jail time. He also noted that Clay’s wife must be a saint for still supporting him.
Clay had previously ignored court orders to stop contacting his wife. He claimed his messages were just words and that he went too far. His wife received many hurtful texts, including threats about her life and home.
After a series of messages, she agreed to meet him, thinking he had changed. However, he sent more threats soon after. Clay was later found by police and expressed regret for his actions. His defense lawyer mentioned that Clay’s MS led him to drink, which contributed to his behavior.
