Ipswich MP Jack Abbott believes the town’s creative talents deserve national recognition
Recently, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised Ipswich’s grassroots music scene. She highlighted Ed Sheeran’s success as a great example. This shows that Ipswich has a strong cultural foundation.
The City of Culture title isn’t just for big cities. So, Ipswich can apply for 2029. The program aims to celebrate community culture and boost local regeneration through a year of events.
Abbott met with culture minister Sir Chris Bryant to discuss the bid. He believes Ipswich has a vibrant arts scene, from dance to music. He wants to elevate this scene and make it more recognized.
Abbott has also spoken with local leaders about the competition. He’s eager to grab the chance to showcase Ipswich’s talents and help the town grow.
Earlier this month, Nandy spoke highly of Ipswich’s music scene. Local councils are responsible for submitting bids. Bradford City Council successfully bid for 2025, expecting a big economic boost.
Other councils, like Wrexham and Derby, are also planning bids for 2029. Ipswich Borough Council agrees with Abbott about the town’s cultural offerings. However, they won’t comment on a bid until the competition is officially announced.
Ipswich hosts many cultural events, including the One Big Multicultural Festival. Abbott wants Ipswich to be the next City of Culture. He remembers when Nandy visited for a surprise Ed Sheeran gig.
Sheeran, from Framlingham, often performed in Ipswich during his early career. He hasn’t forgotten his roots, surprising fans with a performance at the Town Hall last year.
Brighten the Corners organized over 70 performances in 2024. Ipswich Music Day also attracted around 10,000 attendees. The town has seen murals and various cultural events, showcasing its vibrant community spirit.
