Ipswich is buzzing after comedy legends Ricky Gervais and Omid Djalili lit up the Regent Theatre with their unforgettable shows
Ipswich: It’s been an amazing week in Ipswich! Big names in comedy have come to town, and the vibe is electric.
Ricky Gervais took the stage at the Regent Theatre for two nights, and local favorite Omid Djalili wowed the crowd with his show, Namaste, on Friday.
Djalili, who lives in Ipswich, was super excited to perform for the “comedy-savvy” folks here. He’s already taken his show around the world, hitting places like Australia and the USA.
Sadly, the comedy scene also faced a loss this week with the passing of Tony Slattery, who was set to perform at the New Wolsey Theatre.
The Ipswich Borough Council is thrilled to host such big names, saying it’s proud to bring world-class entertainment to the stage.
Councillor Jane Riley mentioned that the Regent Theatre and Corn Exchange have a great reputation for showcasing top comedy talent. They’re always working to bring in artists who want to test their material before heading out on bigger tours.
She believes the theatre’s size and welcoming atmosphere help attract these amazing performers.
Last year, they approved a £3.45 million renovation for the theatre, which will include bigger bar areas and more accessible facilities.
Djalili, who moved to Ipswich in 2020, is excited about the future. Ms. Riley shared that they’re already planning an exciting lineup for 2026 and beyond, aiming to keep the theatre’s 95-year legacy alive.
