A Glasgow steak restaurant’s Instagram allure faces reality in a recent lunch review, revealing mixed results for diners.
Glasgow: I was so excited to try The McMillan on Pollokshaws Road. Their steak and chips lunch deal for just £12 had me counting down the days.
That Instagram post with over 4,500 likes had everyone buzzing about this midweek treat. So, I decided it was finally time to check it out.
On Monday, I made my way there, ready to put this steak deal to the test. I mean, it’s all in the name of journalism, right?
The McMillan looks a bit odd from the outside, a grey building squeezed between a petrol station and some cute craft shops. But I was curious about what was inside.
When I arrived around 12:45 PM, a friendly staff member welcomed me and asked if I wanted to dine in or take away. I chose to sit in while they prepared my meal.
Inside, the place was cozy, with a few people enjoying their lunches. I spotted a couple of guys and a group of well-dressed women sipping red wine with their steaks. I felt a twinge of envy and thought about suggesting a similar outing to my friends.
While waiting for my takeaway, I found myself glued to the large TV screens showing steaks sizzling and cocktails being mixed. It was oddly captivating, like a foodie’s version of a kid’s show.
Finally, I saw the £12 lunch deal being served to some diners. It looked pretty good, with a decent-sized steak and chips in a cute little metal bucket.
When my turn came, I got my brown bag with my steak cooked medium rare, just how I like it. I couldn’t resist peeking inside as soon as I stepped out.
After weeks of drooling over The McMillan’s social media posts, I was ready for a reveal. I opened the lid, and it looked… well, okay.
The chips were crispy and seasoned just right, but the steak was a bit overcooked and came in chunky pieces instead of nice slices.
Still, I wasn’t too disappointed. You can’t go wrong with steak and chips, especially with that delicious peppercorn sauce.
I think skipping the extra prawns for £5 might have hurt the dish’s presentation. But hey, they say never meet your heroes, right? Maybe the same goes for Insta-perfect food.
Despite the steak being a tad overdone, it was still tender and high quality, sourced from a local butcher. Overall, it was a decent value for a special lunch treat.
If you’re tempted, I’d suggest dining in to enjoy the full experience. And maybe splurge on a glass of red wine while you’re at it. The restaurant has a lovely vibe for a relaxing afternoon.
Those ladies enjoying their lunch had the right idea, and I hope to join them soon. The deal runs from 12 PM to 3 PM, Monday to Friday, for just £12.
And if you want prawns, it’ll cost you an extra fiver. I waited about 12 minutes for my meal since it was quiet, but I’d recommend booking if you want to sit in.
Rating: 3/5. The McMillan Bar and Chop House is located at 862 Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow.
