Armagh: Janice McCartney is walking 100 miles this February. She aims to raise money for Huntington’s Disease Association Northern Ireland. This charity has supported her through her journey with Huntington’s disease.

Janice is a familiar face at Lila’s on Scotch Street. She has been involved with the charity for years after her own diagnosis. She now serves on the board and appreciates the support they provide.

Huntington’s disease affects the brain, similar to Parkinson’s and dementia. It usually starts in your 40s. Janice turns 50 soon and feels lucky to have only minor issues with balance and memory.

Her father had Huntington’s disease, diagnosed at 35. He fought the illness for many years before passing away at 58. Janice explains that it’s a genetic condition with a 50/50 chance of being passed on.

Janice has participated in many fundraisers, including barn dances and coffee mornings. Now, she’s committed to walking 100 miles to raise more funds for the charity.

Starting on February 1, this challenge motivates her to exercise more. She says it helps her mentally. Her son encouraged her to share her goal on Facebook, adding pressure to stick with it.

So far, she has walked 14 miles and raised over £1,300. She initially thought raising £100 would be great! She has until February 28 to reach her goal, and she’s optimistic about surpassing it.

Former Irish rugby player Rory Best helped her by making a donation and promoting her cause. Janice appreciates his support and kindness.

The funds raised will support HDANI’s work and counseling services. Janice notes that the charity is struggling financially. The money raised goes directly to support families affected by Huntington’s disease.

Many people are unaware of the charity and its services. They hold an annual conference for families and are actively researching ways to slow the disease’s progression.

Janice believes future research may benefit her sons, even if it doesn’t help her directly. You can donate to her challenge at Lila’s or online through the localgiving page.
