A Glasgow couple was devastated after a thief stole their engagement ring and other valuables worth £10,000 from their home
He made off with Miss Matthews’ engagement ring, another ring, and two expensive laptops. Later, he told the police he sold the rings to a pawnbroker.
Before this, Ali had tried to break into two other homes and even opened a locked shed. He eventually pleaded guilty to theft and attempted break-ins at Glasgow Sheriff Court.
The court heard that when Mr. and Mrs. Matthews returned home, they found a broken washing line and smashed windows. They quickly realized their diamond engagement ring, worth £4,500, was gone, along with other jewelry valued at around £3,000.
They also discovered two stolen laptops, each worth about £1,000. In total, the stolen items were valued at £10,000. Forensics found blood on the kitchen window ledge, which linked back to Ali, leading to his arrest.
The engagement ring and another ring were later recovered from a pawnbroker after Ali informed the police. Earlier that day, he had forced open a shed in Pollokshields but didn’t take anything.
He also attempted to break into another property by smashing a window. Ali was granted bail but breached it the very next day. When caught, he made threatening remarks to the police, showing a history of violent behavior.
Sheriff Louise Arrol KC didn’t hold back, calling his actions disgraceful, especially given his long criminal record dating back to 2001.
