London: Just Stop Oil activists made quite the scene in the West End. They jumped onto the stage during a performance featuring Sigourney Weaver, who’s known for her roles in Alien and Avatar.

This happened at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane around 8 PM on a Monday. The activists held up a sign that read, “Over 1.5 Degrees is a Global Shipwreck.” The audience didn’t take it well and started booing as security escorted the protesters off the stage.

Scientists have been sounding the alarm about climate change, warning that going over 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels could lead to disastrous consequences for our planet. Just Stop Oil is pushing for the government to stop burning fossil fuels by 2030.

One of the protesters, Hayley Walsh, shared her fears for her kids. She said she can’t just sit back and let them face a future filled with food shortages and extreme weather. Despite her efforts to promote sustainability, she feels it’s not enough.

She emphasized that the climate crisis is already affecting us, pointing to wildfires in California and floods in Spain. It’s not just a future problem; it’s happening now, and we need a global response.

Another protester, Richard Weir, expressed his frustration with political inaction. He compared the current situation to the decline of UK manufacturing, saying we need to unite and demand a shift away from fossil fuels.

Sigourney Weaver plays Prospero in this new version of The Tempest, a role traditionally held by men. The production started in December and will continue until February 1.

Earlier this month, two women faced charges for vandalizing Charles Darwin’s grave in Westminster Abbey, writing “1.5 is dead” in orange chalk. This was a direct reference to the urgent need to limit global warming.
