Volunteers gathered to clean Musselburgh beach, collecting 25 bags of litter and more, as part of a campaign to combat litter.
This clean-up was part of the Upstream Battle campaign. The goal is to stop litter from reaching the sea.
Twenty-five volunteers joined in, collecting 25 bags of litter, 15 tyres, three traffic cones, and part of a melted wheelie bin. They gathered a total of 253.8 kg of waste.
Some unusual items found included an unlit tealight and a plastic marker cone.
Fiona Gallie from Keep Scotland Beautiful mentioned that they postponed morning events due to Storm Éowyn. However, they were happy to collaborate for the afternoon clean-up.
She thanked Emma Marriott and Kerrie Flockhart for their help and all the volunteers who participated. They also collected five Upstream Battle litter surveys to highlight litter problem areas in Scotland.
Keep Scotland Beautiful encourages everyone to help reduce litter in Musselburgh. You can do this by completing a litter survey along the River Esk or joining a local litter pick.
The Upstream Battle campaign is supported by the Scottish Government’s Marine Fund Scotland.
Emma Marriott from the Scottish Seabird Centre expressed her gratitude for the volunteers who braved the cold weather. She noted the importance of community support in tackling litter issues.
Emma looks forward to more clean-up efforts in the future.
