Kidney Care UK has expressed worries to ITV regarding a recent Coronation Street plot involving kidney disease and its portrayal
Manchester: Recently, Coronation Street has been showing Carla dealing with sepsis, which has affected her kidneys. It’s a pretty intense storyline.
Back in 2018, Carla received a kidney from her half-brother Aidan, played by Shane Ward. Now, Kidney Care UK, a charity that helps kidney patients and their families, is a bit worried about how this is all being portrayed.
Fiona Loud, the charity’s Policy Director, mentioned that they’d like ITV to clarify how tough it is to live on dialysis and how long people usually wait for a transplant. They want viewers to understand the reality of kidney disease better.
They’ve even reached out to ITV to discuss how to make the storyline more realistic. The charity has worked with the show before, especially when Carla had her kidney transplant.
Kidney Care UK believes that soap operas can really help raise awareness about health issues. They pointed out that in the UK, most people waiting for a transplant are waiting for a kidney, and it’s a big deal to show these stories on TV.
They also shared their concerns on a private Facebook group for kidney patients, saying they’ve written to ITV about it. The charity feels that the quick timeline in the past upset many in the kidney community, and they want to ensure the current storyline is handled with care.
They’re hoping to work with the writers to tell a more accurate story about living with kidney disease. It’s not too late to make changes, and they’re eager to help raise awareness.
ITV has been approached for a comment on this situation.
