Labour’s new plans for Hampshire may strain families in Basingstoke, risking local services and infrastructure.
As a borough councillor, my focus is on getting the best deal for Basingstoke. Labour’s top-down approach to housing and infrastructure raises concerns for our community.
They want higher housing targets for our borough. This could strain local infrastructure and change the character of our towns and villages. Plus, delaying the new hospital until 2037 is disappointing for residents.
Labour’s restructuring plans might also threaten Basingstoke’s financial stability. Our borough is currently debt-free and has income-generating assets. We can provide services beyond just council tax. But, we could end up covering debts from other councils if we merge.
There’s also a risk that Basingstoke may have to take on housing needs from other councils. This could harm our green fields and put pressure on local infrastructure.
Despite these challenges, I’m committed to protecting Basingstoke’s identity and services. I’ll ensure that any changes benefit our residents and that their voices are heard.
Cllr Sean Dillow, Borough Councillor for Kempshott & Buckskin
