The rebuild of Leighton Hospital is set to cost around £1.5 billion, with plans to start in late 2026
Crewe: The Department of Health and Social Care just announced some big changes. They’re looking at spending up to £1.5 billion on rebuilding Leighton Hospital. The plan is to kick things off around late 2026.
Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, mentioned that the old New Hospitals Programme was a bit of a mess—unfunded and just not doable. In fact, not a single new hospital was built in the last five years!
Some projects got pushed back a lot, but Leighton Hospital is in a better spot because of issues with Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC). So, it’s not facing as long a delay as others.
On January 20, Mr. Streeting said they really want to get this program back on track. He emphasized that they’re determined to make it work this time.
Andrew Cooper, the local MP, and Russ Favager from the NHS Trust are both feeling positive about the news. They’re planning to submit an application for planning permission this year and hope to get the ball rolling soon.
Mr. Favager is aiming to start construction in about two years, even though some folks think it might take longer. Mr. Cooper is thrilled, saying this is the news that residents have been waiting for.
Mr. Favager reassured everyone that the Healthier Futures program is moving forward, not slowing down. So, there’s a lot to look forward to!
