Lidl is one step closer to opening a new store in Bournemouth, pending final council approval
Bournemouth: Lidl is making moves to set up a new supermarket at Westover Retail Park. The local council will have the final say on this project. They’re meeting soon to discuss it.
If they give the green light, it could mean some existing shops like Pets at Home and Pizza Hut might have to close. That’s a big deal for the area!
Steve Davies, a planning officer, thinks the supermarket should get the go-ahead. He’s laid out some conditions for Lidl to follow if they get approved.
During a recent consultation, most folks were in favor of the new Lidl, but some raised concerns about losing shops and more traffic in the area.
To address these worries, Lidl would need to contribute funds for better travel options, including a new pedestrian crossing. That could help ease traffic issues.
Some people worry that a new store might hurt local shops, but Lidl insists they’re not planning to close any existing stores. They say there’s a real demand for their products in the area.
Interestingly, Tesco, which is nearby, has voiced concerns about the impact of Lidl’s plans. They think it could be a problem for the local economy.
On the bright side, Lidl claims the new store could create around 40 jobs, although it might not be a net gain if other businesses close down.
