Explore the rich culture and history of Scotland’s Travellers through personal stories and experiences shared by Jess Smith and her family.
Aberfeldy: As night fell, Jess Smith listened to stories that had been passed down through her family. She learned early on that not everyone welcomed the Travellers, often called ‘tinkers’.
Her childhood was filled with adventures in an old blue bus, driven by her dad, Charlie Riley. Those experiences inspired her books, including her autobiographical trilogy.
Jess’s father wrote about his life as a Traveller, sharing tales of their vibrant culture and the challenges they faced. His manuscript, however, was never shared with the family before he passed away.
After years of searching, Jess found his writings, which included his memories of growing up in a close-knit community and the discrimination they faced.
One of his stories was about a wild ride down a hill with a wooden wagon and a runaway horse. It was a close call, but it became a cherished tale shared around the fire.
Another story told of his dramatic birth during a snowstorm, with his mother and sister battling the elements. His father’s reaction was both humorous and heartwarming.
Jess’s father, like many Travellers, faced hardships due to the ‘Tinker Experiment,’ a policy that aimed to change their way of life. Despite this, he embraced his nomadic roots.
After marrying and having eight children, he converted a bus into a cozy home for the family, and they traveled across the country, soaking in the beauty of nature.
Jess has dedicated her life to sharing the stories of Travellers, especially after her father’s death. She made a promise to keep his legacy alive and raise awareness about their culture.
During the pandemic, she revisited her father’s manuscript and included his stories in her new book, which highlights the rich history of Travellers in Scotland.
While the world has changed, Jess believes the essence of Travelling remains. She emphasizes the importance of storytelling and the connections that bind their community.
Jess reflects on how modern Travellers lead lives similar to everyone else, but the heart of their culture endures. She worries that as time passes, these stories may fade away.
Her latest book, “Button Bog: Voices and Treasures From A Traveller’s Kist,” captures the spirit of her family’s experiences and the stories that shaped their lives.
