London: Haringey Council is in trouble. They declared a “funding emergency.” They’re asking the government for £37 million to help out.

The council leader, Peray Ahmet, says costs are rising. Plus, the population is growing. This puts a lot of pressure on their budget.

Ahmet mentioned that Haringey has faced “untold pressure” after years of government cuts. They have less money but more people needing services.

She explained that they need this funding to keep up with demands. They want to protect important services for residents.

Haringey is in talks with the government for this financial support. They see it as a safety net for daily expenses and vulnerable residents.

Last year, similar help was given to Havering and Croydon councils. Both are still dealing with financial struggles.

Croydon has faced bankruptcy three times since 2020. They’re still dealing with high service costs and a huge debt.

Havering is also in trouble, expecting a £74 million budget gap. They need emergency funding to avoid going bust.

Newham Council recently asked to raise bills by 10%. They’re struggling with housing costs for homeless families.

Ahmet is hopeful the government will support Haringey. They plan to reduce pressures and protect essential services.

To help their budget, Haringey may raise council tax by nearly five percent. This means an extra £100 for band D households.

Ahmet appreciates the £16 million from the government. But she knows it won’t fix years of cuts in one go.

She insists they will keep pushing for a fair funding system that meets local needs.
