Councillor Amos seeks funding to honor Powick Old Bridge’s rich history
This month marks a year since the medieval bridge partially collapsed. It’s a key part of Worcestershire’s Civil War heritage. After the collapse, work began to stabilize the bridge. Repairs by Worcestershire County Council are still pending.
Powick Old Bridge is famous for its role in the English Civil War. It was the site of the Battle of Powick Bridge in 1642 and the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
Cllr Amos shared his plans. He wants to create a commemoration for the bridge when it reopens. This includes an information board and a plaque detailing its history.
He noted that there’s currently no information for visitors at the site. The recent damage has shown how much people value this historic bridge. Amos is also collaborating with an expert in Lottery Grant bids, who has successfully raised funds for other projects.
The Grade I listed Powick Old Bridge was closed in February 2024 for safety. Investigations revealed that part of the supporting wingwall fell into the River Teme. This caused a loss of support for the main bridge.
The collapse likely resulted from recent flooding and debris buildup. Historic England states the bridge was built before 1447 and partially rebuilt in the 17th century.
