Meet Lucy Masters, a talented photographer from Chew Valley, who captures stunning wildlife moments, especially during the winter season
Chew Valley: Lucy Masters is a local photographer who has a knack for capturing the beauty of nature. She loves winter, especially at the lake. The scenery changes so much with the seasons, and she finds it magical.
When we met, the lake was serene, with swans gliding across the water. Lucy quickly grabbed her camera to snap some shots. She told me that winter makes wildlife more visible, which is great for photography.
Lucy volunteers as a bird warden at Chew Valley Lake, working to protect local wildlife. She shared a cool story about spotting a juvenile osprey while conducting a survey. Even though the bird didn’t catch anything, she got some amazing photos.
Her passion for photography started young, inspired by her mum. She reminisced about using a film camera to capture butterflies, even if most of the photos turned out blurry. It sparked her interest, and she’s been hooked ever since.
After some time away, Lucy returned to Chew Valley in 2018 and reignited her love for the area. She enjoys photographing spots like Herriott’s Bridge and Heron’s Green, which offer stunning views and great birdwatching opportunities.
Recently, her winter photo titled ‘Scot’s Pines’ won first prize in a photography competition. She feels lucky to have her work shared in various publications and on her website.
When I asked for her tips on winter photography, she said to get up early and check the weather. Cold, clear mornings can lead to the best shots, especially with swans or geese in the frame.
Lucy also emphasized the importance of responsible photography. She wants to share the beauty of the lake while ensuring it remains protected. It’s crucial to be mindful of fragile habitats and avoid overcrowding sensitive areas.
Besides Chew Valley, Lucy loves exploring other local spots like RSPB Ham Wall and Steart Marshes. But for her, nothing beats the tranquility of Chew Valley Lake, especially when capturing a swan in the mist.
You can check out her work on social media and her website, where she sells her calendar and cards. Lucy’s passion for wildlife and photography truly shines through her stunning images.
