The historic Mackintosh Lighthouse will transform into a green tech hub, boosting jobs and the local economy.
Glasgow: The Mackintosh Lighthouse is getting a new life. It will become a green tech hub. This change aims to help local businesses grow and create jobs.
The Lighthouse, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was once home to The Herald. It’s a beautiful building and an important part of Glasgow’s history.
It closed during the pandemic and hasn’t fully reopened since. But now, Glasgow City Council is in talks to bring it back to life with Sustainable Ventures Ltd.
Documents show that the new lease will help the Lighthouse be used again. It will also provide many benefits for the city and its people.
The plan includes keeping public access to the viewing platform and other areas. This way, everyone can still enjoy the building.
Initial talks with Sustainable Ventures have been positive. They are linked to Europe’s largest climate tech startup ecosystem.
Over 500 potential businesses are interested in joining this new space. An impressive 85% of startups want to be on a waiting list for membership.
These companies come from all over Scotland and even from cities like Manchester and London.
The goal is to secure private investment to turn the Lighthouse into a Net Zero Innovation Hub. This will help clean tech companies grow and thrive.
Sustainable Ventures already supports many climate tech startups across the UK. Councillors will review the proposals on February 6.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly believes this project will revitalize the Lighthouse. It’s a great opportunity for Glasgow’s historic center.
