Oxford: So, McDonald’s is gearing up to open a new spot in Cornmarket, right where the health food place Leon used to be. They thought they’d be ready this month, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until March.

When the new place opens, the current McDonald’s near the Clarendon Centre will shut down. But here’s the kicker: the city council said the new location is too close to homes. They’re worried about noise if McDonald’s stays open late.

They wanted to extend hours from 6 AM to 3 AM, but the council said that would disturb the folks living nearby. They pointed out that there are residential flats and even a hotel close by, so a 3 AM closing time just isn’t going to fly.

Interestingly, the report mentioned that other places like Burger King and Cosy Club close at midnight, which is considered acceptable. Plus, McDonald’s had extended hours back in 2004, but that was at a different location away from residential areas.

One of the workers on the new McDonald’s said it’s a four-story building. The kitchen will be in the basement, and the restaurant will take up the ground and first floors. They’re even adding a separate entrance for delivery drivers to keep things from getting too crowded.

Staff at the current McDonald’s are already hearing whispers that they’ll close once the new one opens. It seems like the new spot will have more room, which is a plus since the current place is mostly standing room.

So far, McDonald’s hasn’t said much about moving to this new central location. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out!
