Shagufta Asam, a dedicated foster mum from Ilford, recently received an MBE for her incredible work with vulnerable children
Recently, she was surprised to learn she received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. “I was just shocked,” she said, recalling the moment she got the letter from the Cabinet Office.
For Shagufta, fostering is a passion, not a job. She started when her youngest was just a baby, and her eldest was eight. “We knew there was a need for foster carers, so we jumped in,” she explained.
Over the years, she has welcomed kids of all ages, from babies to teens. Right now, she’s caring for three teenage boys. Her first foster child was a baby boy she picked up from the hospital. They cared for him for 18 months before he was adopted, and they still keep in touch.
Redbridge Council is using her inspiring story to encourage more people to consider fostering. Council leader Kam Rai praised Shagufta’s dedication, saying her love and support have made a lasting impact.
Shagufta encourages anyone thinking about fostering to take the leap. “It can be life-changing for both the child and you. All you need is a spare room,” she said.
