The Alton community came together to celebrate the life of Paddy Mendham, a beloved former mayor, during a heartfelt memorial service
Alton: The community gathered at the Church of St Lawrence to honor Paddy Mendham, a former mayor who passed away on December 27. His memorial service took place on January 11.
Paddy’s son, Paul, delivered a heartfelt eulogy, expressing gratitude to everyone who braved the cold to attend and those watching from afar in the UK and Australia.
Paul shared fond memories of his dad, who was born in Watford in 1938. He reminisced about Paddy’s childhood, his love for sports, and how he met his wife, Annis, during university.
He recalled how Paddy was a bit of a character, even breaking a borrowed bike while trying to impress Annis. Their love story began with a dance at a student hop, and they married in 1965.
After moving to Alton in 1975, Paddy became a well-respected figure in the community. He served on the town council and was mayor twice, proudly wearing the mayoral chains.
Paddy was also a passionate rugby player and a dedicated member of the Alton Rugby Club. His love for the sport and his community was evident in everything he did.
In his later years, he worked in cardiac rehabilitation and helped establish the Alton branch of the Anna Chaplaincy with Annis. They were active members of their church, contributing in many ways.
Paul highlighted how Paddy’s strong Christian faith guided his life, inspiring him to serve others and build lasting friendships. He was a beloved figure, often referred to as “part of Alton.”
As the service concluded, Paul shared a touching message from his dad, emphasizing the joy of family and the importance of faith. Paddy’s legacy will surely live on in the hearts of those he touched.
