Mexico is pushing for a name change for the US, following a dispute over the Gulf of America, previously known as the Gulf of Mexico.
Mexico City: Mexico is taking a stand against the US. They want Google Maps to change the name of the United States. This comes after a disagreement between President Claudia Sheinbaum and Donald Trump over the Gulf of Mexico’s name.
Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America through an executive order. Google Maps updated the name for US users, but it remains the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico.
Sheinbaum suggested that the US should be called America Mexicana. She referenced a 1607 map that used this historic name. She officially asked Google to update their maps to reflect this change.
Sheinbaum argued that Trump’s name change isn’t legal. She cited a United Nations convention stating that a country can only change names within 12 nautical miles of its coast.
Google said they made the change to align with the US Geographic Names System. Meanwhile, Trump has been tough on Mexico, threatening tariffs due to immigration issues.
He recently imposed a 25% tariff on Mexican goods. Trump’s actions are part of a broader trade strategy, which also includes Canada.
In other news, Trump plans to declassify documents related to historical assassinations. He also aims to address TikTok’s status in the US and has promised to reinstate a ban on transgender military service.
