Mid Suffolk District Council shows full support for farmers ahead of a tractor protest on the A14, urging action against new tax changes.
Mid Suffolk: Councillors are standing by local farmers ahead of a protest. The council leader even wore a ‘farmer’s uniform’ to show support.
The council has promised to look into ways to help farmers. They’re also asking Suffolk MPs to review recent government changes that could lead to a ‘Family Farm Tax.’
Farmers are worried about this tax. They’ve organized a ‘go-slow’ protest on the A14, driving tractors at 20mph between Bury St Edmunds and Felixstowe.
The protest will happen from 10am to 4pm. Suffolk Police advises drivers to plan ahead due to possible delays along the route.
Cllr Harry Richardson emphasized that family-run farms are crucial to the local economy. He noted that farmers are vital for food production and land care.
He also mentioned that farming costs have risen, while prices have not kept up. This puts farmers in a tough spot financially.
The National Farmers Union warns that up to 75% of farms could be at risk due to the proposed tax changes, which could impact jobs and food supply.
Cllr Andy Mellen, the council leader, wore his ‘farmer’s uniform’ to support the farmers. He said many are struggling with financial issues and climate challenges.
He added that the Chancellor’s changes might be too much for some farmers to handle.
Details of the protest route include starting from Levington, joining the A14, and returning to Felixstowe. Suffolk Police is working with organizers for a safe protest.
