Britain’s population is set to soar by 5 million in just seven years, driven entirely by migration, raising concerns among political leaders.
The latest estimates show that the only way the population will grow in the next 25 years is through people moving here from abroad. It’s a bit of a shocker, right?
By 2032, we’re looking at a 7.3% increase from the 67.6 million we had in 2022. To put it in perspective, that’s like adding ten Sheffields to the mix!
What’s driving this? Well, it’s all about net migration. Births and deaths are pretty much balancing each other out, with both sitting at around 6.8 million.
The numbers show that about 9.9 million people are expected to arrive in the UK, while around 4.9 million will leave. That’s a lot of movement!
Chris Philp, the Tory Shadow Home Secretary, is sounding the alarm. He thinks 10 million arrivals over ten years is way too high. He’s calling for a legal cap on visas to get things under control.
Philp also mentioned that we need to get more of the 9 million people who aren’t working into jobs and invest in technology to reduce our reliance on low-skilled migration.
He’s pretty adamant that these projections are shocking and unacceptable, and he believes we need to take action to prevent this from happening.
