Minehead is inviting creative ideas to tackle climate change with a £1,000 funding opportunity for local projects
Minehead: Last Saturday, the Minehead Coast and Development Trust announced a cool £1,000 funding for ideas to help the town adapt to climate change. This was part of the launch for the new Climate Adaptation Plan at the Beach Hotel.
The plan was developed with input from the local community and the Somerset Wildlife Trust. It follows their “Act to Adapt” project, which aims to prepare folks for the increasing bad weather, flooding, and heatwaves we’re seeing more often.
Over 40 people showed up for the launch, including MP Rachel Gilmore. There were talks from local experts and a presentation about funding from the Somerset Riverways Authorities. They even screened a film called “Sea, Land, and City,” showcasing positive adaptation projects in southern England.
Natalie Barnett from the Somerset Wildlife Trust shared how inspiring it was to see the community come together. She pointed out that while cutting carbon emissions has been slow, it’s crucial to take action locally to protect our way of life.
The “Act to Adapt” projects suggest practical ideas like planting more trees, adapting to flooding, and working with local planners. A spokesperson from the Rivers Authority noted that floods in Somerset are becoming more intense and unpredictable due to climate change.
