Morrisons has taken legal action after farmers blocked their Bridgwater site, highlighting ongoing concerns over fair food pricing.
Bridgwater: Farmers hit the roads on January 10 and 11, 2025, from 8 PM to 8 AM, to push for fair food pricing. It was a big deal!
The Farmers to Action group organized the whole thing. About 50 tractors showed up, blocking the entrance to a key site for the southwest food supply chain.
This site is pretty important, employing around 1,100 people and delivering about 2.1 million food cases weekly to nearly 80 Morrisons stores.
Morrisons said they understand farmers’ concerns but need to keep the food supply chain running smoothly. They’re in a tough spot.
A spokesperson mentioned that due to recent protests and the risk of more action, they had to go to court for an injunction to stop any unlawful protests that could disrupt their operations.
They assured everyone that they still want to work with farmers on the issues that matter most to them.
The injunction, granted on January 16, 2025, stops anyone from entering certain areas without permission and prevents blockades or traffic disruptions.
Earlier this month, Sophie Throup, Morrisons’ head of agriculture, shared a video expressing support for farmers. She talked about the inheritance tax and how it affects smaller farms.
She emphasized that they’ve been in touch with the government about these issues and will keep pushing for change.
